At the core of ZEKANI lies a fundamental question: how do machines see movement, and how does that perception alter our physicality? Cameras are placed around the performance space and on the performers themselves.
The stream of the cameras are projected back into the performance space creating a hyper-monitored environment, where the dancers’ movements are magnified and trigger shifts in the visual sphere of the performance.
The inclusion of video cameras that represent surveillance as a central theme invites reflection on how technological systems monitor, track, and analyze our human bodies. What does it mean to live in a world where our movements are not only captured but interpreted and exploited by technological advances?
The dancers are not just moving in space—they are being watched and reinterpreted by technology. In this way, the performance is not only a visual spectacle but a commentary on the digital gaze that increasingly mediates our everyday interactions. In ZEKANI, the surveillance of the dancer's body becomes a metaphor for broader societal dynamics— the line between observation and control is increasingly blurred. This raises important questions about agency and control: How do our actions change when they are constantly being observed?
More than just a spectacle, the piece is immersive not only for the performers but for the audience as well (expand on this), as spectators who enter within the range of the cameras become a part of the digital, visual landscape.
